Case SPROK – a Research to Business project by Åbo Akademi University
SPROK is a research-based language learning game under development at Åbo Akademi University, designed to support smooth and quick integration of immigrant children into their new country’s cultural and linguistic environment. The game leverages monolingualism and pedagogical methods that are created to be accessible and appealing, especially for young learners. SPROK aims to create a fun and learner-oriented way to acquire a new language.
CHALLENGE
The SPROK team targeted to map European markets to identify potential countries for commercializing the game. While the initial market for piloting the game is Finland, an opportunity to introduce the game in other countries that have a similar need for supporting immigrant children’s language development was seen. The client needed an in-depth understanding of the EdTech markets, competitors, and educational practices in each country.
SOLUTION
Sailer conducted a comprehensive market study, analysing the language learning and EdTech markets in Finland, Sweden, Germany, Spain, France, and Italy. The study utilized a broad range of approaches: qualitative interviews, competitor analysis, and service design tools, which added depth and concreteness to the research.
The results were presented in a visually impactful way using Sailer’s service design and visual reporting methods. This approach helped the client understand the specific characteristics of each market and use the findings as a foundation for clear strategic decisions.
WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE RESEARCH?
The SPROK team gained valuable insights into competitors, market environments, and a better understanding of how school systems and language education differ across countries. Through the research, the client was able to identify the key target markets with the greatest potential for language learning solutions like SPROK.
By utilizing the research results, SPROK’s strategy could be adjusted to align with the specific characteristics and needs of the target markets. Additionally, the insights generated by the study guided the further development of the SPROK game, enabling the creation of an even better learning experience.
